SU aims to tackle eight of humanity’s greatest challenges: poverty, education, energy, health, nutrition, environmental degradation, water scarcity, and the settlement of space. This will be done using “exponential technologies” such January 2019 Catholic Calendar as bioinformatics, artificial intelligence, neuroscience, robotics and nanotechnology. The founders describe their mission as follows: “Our mission is to educate, inspire and empower leaders to apply to humanity’s grand challenges.”

The SingularityU Summits are two-day, global conferences designed to give leaders an understanding of how exponential technologies can be used to bring about positive change and economic growth. The summits have become an annual resource for networking and inspiration for local communities. They provide an opportunity to learn about groundbreaking technologies, start-ups and ideas, and can be used as an educational tool for government and youth.
The FESTOS project was carried out in the 7th Research Framework Program of EU Security Research. The task of the project was to identify future technologies that could be misused by terrorists or criminals. The focus was on low probability, but high impact (low likelihood – H high impact). The results flowed into the creation of narrative scenarios, which on the one hand represent an impact analysis and on the other hand are suitable for increasing the awareness of a technology abuse. The discussion of research-relevant and political implications form the conclusion of the article.
Evaluating future technical and social developments repeatedly poses major challenges for science and research. The farther the foresight points into the future, the more difficult it is to include new technical and social developments, but also political, natural and manmade influences.Nevertheless, future studies, with relatively short as well as medium and large time horizons, are of great strategic importance.
The aim is to deal with different eventualities at an early stage, to examine existing forms of political and economic realities and, if necessary, to develop new instruments. Especially in the field of security research, an emphasis has been placed in recent years on the early detection of dangers. The European but also German research programs make this clear (Federal Ministry of Education and Research 2012, European Commission 2012).
The aim is a timely, critical review of relevant national and international security structures. The innovative capacity of terrorist groups has been impressively demonstrated by the attacks of September 11, 2001, but also by the attempted attacks with previously undetectable plastic explosives in 2010 . Since then, German and European security institutions have sought to adjust to new, unknown threats.
It should be noted that the affinity to new technologies differs for terrorists and criminals. If criminal organizations are often at a high technical level,  the urge for technological innovations is very different among terrorist groups (see Dolnik 2007, Cragin 2007). Although most attacks have been carried out in the past with low-tech, there are also some examples in which January 2019 Catholic Calendar high-tech has already been used (for example, in the Saringas attacks of the Japanese group Ōmu Shinrikyō 1995 or by the use of Google Maps for Planning and Conducting the Attacks in Mumbai 2008).
